Tour de Belle-Ile 2012 : A successful event

With 504 registered  sailing yachts, the 5th Tour de Belle-Ile, won by Sébastien Josse (Groupe Edmond de Rothschild), etablishes a new record of participation.

Report of this new edition by the event creators and organizers, Aurélie and Romain Pilliard :

Can you give us the report of 5th édition of Tour de Belle-Ile ?

We received excellent feedback from media, sponsors and participants during and after the event, it is a great success !

In five years time, the Tour de Belle-Ile became an important sailing race in France.  All participants appreciated the organisation, services and animations setting up during the 3 days and as well the proximity between professionals and amateurs. It’s not only a race for professional sailors, it’s a race for everyone, with the prfessional sailors.

More and more professionnals participate to the Tour de Belle-Ile. This year, we observed a tug of war between the first three boats.

The Tour de Belle-Ile is an opportunity to have fun and envoy in a friendly atmosphere but skippers come here to win ! During the race, there was a tug of war between Groupe Edmond de Rothschild and Foncia with finally the victory of the first one, skipped by Sebastien Josse, in 4h48’.  Moreover, the professionals registered very early in the regatta, it is a sign that the race is taken seriously by the skippers and they include the race in their annual sailing calendar.

Why did you decide to close the registration a few days before the race ?

For each registration, there are many documents to check and transmit to organizing autorities this is the reason why we needed to anticipate the closing date for registration.
This year, the registrations were a success because participants did an entry form online. We are going to renew it for the next year because thanks this, participants don’t waste time on Friday before the race, for their registration finalization.

For the third consecutive time, the « appel d’air » charity event is a success, could you remind it for us?

Since 2010, the Tour de Belle-Ile joins to the sailing race a charity event « appel d’air ». The concept is to give a unique opportunity for hospitalised children to discover the navigation in participating in an important race.

This year, 11 children had the pleasure to participate to the regatta and volunteers, nurses, and physical therapists, followed them all time. During this fifth edition, children navigated on Friday and on Saturday and went in an airfield to did microlighting on Sunday. It was an unforgettable moment when one of “appel d’air” children took the microphone to say how much she was happy to be here and thanked all of us. Those outcomes show that we have to keep it up!

And about the safety organization, did everything go well ?

We took important safety measures and we were in permanent contact with authorities and the SNSM (French equivalent of RNLI) in case of problems. During the event, we had variable weather conditions and there were two dismasting but some ribs from the safety fleet (20 power-boats managed by the race comittee) intervened quickly and efficiently. It’s important that crews feel safe during the regatta, that’s why specific cross-hatching of the regatta-aera was set up.

Let’s talk about the future, is the event a bright future?

Our main objective is to welcome more participants! The Tour de Belle-Ile is in expansion, the event is enough mature to register new people. We shall adapt our organization around the size of our event in term of safety organisation. We really want to respect the image of melting pot composed by famous sailors, families and amateurs. To succeed in this challenge, we need some important funding. With the success of previous editions, we would like to propose a sponsorship programme through a Title-Sponsor and expend the communication during all the year and not only during the event. It has already started with our sportsboat Open 7,50 “Tour de belle-Ile” competing all year long and with the outdoor photo exhibition in La Trinité-sur-mer. More ideas and events are coming soon…
(more…)

1st french race

486 sailing yachts were registered, and the Tour de Belle-Ile became the first sailing event in France in number of boats. The participants came notably from all the Atlantic coast, Belgium, England and Czech Republic.

They converged from three different ports of the bay of Quiberon (La Trinité-sur-mer, Port Haliguen and Le Crouesty) in order to be present on the same starting line the 7th May at 11.30 am.

A lot of famous sailors participated in the Tour de Belle-Ile 2011: Franck Cammas, Jean-Pierre Dick, Sébastien Josse, Vincent Riou, Lionel Lemonchois, Yves le Blevec, Alain Gautier, Franck-Yves Escoffier, Jean Galfione, Anne Caseneuve and Arnaud Boissières for instance, on their own boat. Thomas Coville was also present, he was part of the crew of the monohull Groupama 70 helmed by Franck Cammas.

The “appel d’air” programme, a charity event aimed to enable hospitalized children to participate in the Tour de Belle-Ile sailing race, was renewed in 2011 and it enabled to invite 14 hospitalized children from three Parisian hospitals.
Welcomed during 3 days, the 14 children participated in the sailing race but they had to withdraw from the race before the finishing line because of the strong weather conditions which did not guarantee a sufficient security for the children.

The signal to start was given at 11.30 am for all the participants in a strong breeze of 20-25 knots.
Gitana 11, helmed by Sébastien Josse, beat the record of the Tour de Belle-Ile. Sébastien Josse and his crew took 2h42min00s to complete the race.
Less than 3 minutes after Gitana 11, it is Lionel Lemonchois on “Prince de Bretagne” who crossed the finishing line. Franck Yves Escoffier arrived in third position.
Groupama 70 helmed by Franck Cammas, won, with a racing time of 3h23’14’’, the trophy “Malinovsky” for the first monohull arrived.

The participants arrived during all the afternoon and the evening.
The day after the sailing race, on Sunday 8th of May, the prize-giving took place in the Espace Tour de Belle-Ile on the port of La Trinité sur Mer.
Each winner of the different category (Multi 50’, class 40, IRC…) received a prize. Some “special prizes” were also awarded (the “elegance prize” for instance which rewarded a beautiful yacht) and a draw enabled a crew to win a nice prize : a return to Fort-de France in the Martinique Island (French West indies).

The scale of the event enabled the organization to have a high TV media coverage.
A 2 minutes report of the Tour de Belle-Ile was broadcasted during the national bulletin news at 08.00 pm on TF1 (French TV channel) on Sunday 8th May, followed by 7 900 000 viewers…
Moreover, the day before, on Saturday 7th of May, a 2 minutes report of the Tour de Belle-Ile was also broadcasted during the national bulletin news at 07.00 pm on France3 (French TV channel).

The numerous sponsors of the event came with their clients or colleagues in order to either participate in the sailing race or just follow the start of this wonderful sport event from a spectator boat and they were delighted.

If you represent a company and if you are interested by the Tour de Belle-Ile in order to develop your external and/or internal communication, do not hesitate to contact us. We will suggest you a specific solution to answer your needs and expectations.
